Shopify connects any merchant to every AI conversation search

Shopify connects any merchant to every AI conversation search

Shopify just dropped a massive announcement—and if you run an eCommerce brand, you need to pay attention.

We’re moving into agentic commerce (aka: people shop inside AI conversations), and Shopify is making it so merchants can sell directly inside AI platforms—not just drive clicks to a website.

What Shopify announced:

  • Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) — a new open standard (built with Google) that lets AI agents connect to a merchant’s checkout and actually complete purchases.

  • Google AI Mode + Gemini app shopping — Shopify merchants can sell right inside the conversation with embedded buying.

  • Microsoft Copilot Checkout — same idea: embedded checkout so customers can buy without leaving Copilot.

  • And it’s all managed from Shopify Admin via Agentic Storefronts (including support for ChatGPT).

The part that really hits: Shopify is opening this up beyond Shopify stores with a new Agentic plan—meaning brands on other platforms can plug into Shopify Catalog and sell through AI channels too.

My takeaway: AI is becoming the new storefront. Your product data, offers, policies, and content clarity are about to matter more than ever—because the “buyer” might be an AI agent doing the shopping.

If you’re a brand and want to get ahead of this shift, now’s the time to tighten up:

✅ product data + attributes

✅ FAQs + policies

✅ content that answers real buyer questions
